The origins of Loren Kadi

WHO WE ARE... in just a few words

For the past twenty years, our founders have been creating, exchanging and working with Indian and Indonesian artisans who use authentic materials and traditional techniques. Our relationships with our suppliers is based on exchange and long-term collaboration. These strong connections and the traditional and spontaneous know-how of our Asian artisans make it possible for us to bring our creative vision to life.

We share the same commitment to quality with all our partners; we are dedicated to green manufacturing processes and the use of natural materials, doing our small part to preserve the planet. We have always been deeply committed to human rights, better working conditions, and the improvement of each participant’s quality of life, up to and including for the humblest of workers.

Timeline:

1976: Fascinated by Javanese and Balinese cultures, Jean-Pierre Fayol –a wanderer’s soul and eclectic tastes – created the Cyclo-Pousse line. An avant-gardist, he was one of the first to bring to France finely woven wicker baskets bought in villages belonging to the four corners of Indonesia. He also imported genuine batiks with refined patterns and dashing colours from Java.

1978: A shop opened at 26 rue des Renaudes, Paris 17th, where Cyclo-Pousse customers loved spending time discovering a wealth of unusual antique objects and recent crafts created by artisan-artists, as well as fabrics and cotton batiks and embroidered, colourful clothing.

1983: Cyclo-Pousse became the European specialist in traditional Indonesian textiles (batik and ikat). While their Parisian retail shop served the general public, their trade show activity made them major wholesale suppliers for interior designers.

1988: On the edge of fashion once again, Cyclo-Pousse commissioned the first hand-crafted teak furniture in Indonesia inspired by the colonial style, manufactured replicas of lamps found in European flea markets and developed their collection of batiks to include table arts and linens.

Sculptress and jewellery creator Laurence Li joined the team; and began to design book cases, seats, lamps and folding tables. Jean-Pierre Fayol picked up the paint brush and added splashes of colour to the collections.

1995: A regular traveller to India since 1981, Laurence found inspiration and means of manufacturing her new creations there: silky cotton curtains, embroidered silk plaids and bed covers, and hand-printed velvet and linens.

A meeting with a fine metal-working artisan gave rise to a line of small aluminium-covered furnishings inspired by the Udaipur technique.

As the colonial style gained popularity, Cyclo-Pousse became aware of the ravages of deforestation and clear cutting. They replaced teak with traceable plantation mahogany in their designs.

2009: New cosmetic lines were tested and artisan producers were sought.

2010: Laurence Li created the Loren Kadi company in order to sell natural ayurvedic beauty products via internet. Her new adventure has been founded on the tried and true principles and requirements of quality, respect and equity.
